Food Hygiene Certificate for Market Stalls & Street Food — UK Online
Street food traders, market stallholders and food truck operators are food businesses in exactly the same way as a fixed restaurant — you must register with your local council at least 28 days before you start trading (registration is free and can't be refused), and your unit is inspected and rated under the same Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. Level 2 Food Hygiene is the certificate inspectors and event organisers expect every trader to hold.
Mobile traders register with the local authority where the unit is normally stored or prepared from, and that council's environmental health team carries out the inspection — the 0–5 hygiene rating you receive then travels with you to every market, festival and pitch you work. Because inspections of mobile units often happen on the spot at an event, a PDF certificate the trader can pull up on a phone is a practical advantage over a paper copy left at home.
All five courses align with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) guidance for food handlers across England, Wales and Northern Ireland — the same framework local authorities use when carrying out hygiene inspections.
Market operators and festival organisers increasingly ask for documentation before granting a pitch: typically proof of food business registration, public liability insurance and a Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate for whoever is handling food. If you prepare and wrap food in advance — boxed brownies, wrapped sandwiches, jarred sauces sold from the stall — Natasha's Law PPDS labelling applies, which is covered in the Food Allergy Awareness course.
