Food Hygiene Certificate for Retail & Supermarket Staff — UK Online

Food retail covers everything from packaged-product supermarket aisles to in-store bakeries, butchers' counters and prepared-food sections. Level 1 Food Hygiene is the right baseline for packaged-food staff; Level 2 plus Food Allergy Awareness is needed for anyone handling open food or talking to customers about allergens at a counter.

Supermarket and convenience-store staff who only handle pre-packaged products typically need Level 1 Food Hygiene — the certificate evidences they understand the basic personal hygiene, contamination and temperature principles that apply even to sealed product handling.

All five courses align with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) guidance for food handlers across England, Wales and Northern Ireland — the same framework local authorities use when carrying out hygiene inspections.

Staff working at deli counters, in-store bakeries, butchers' sections, fishmongers or prepared-food kiosks are handling open food and need Level 2 Food Hygiene. Customer-facing roles at these counters also benefit from Food Allergy Awareness because customers ask about allergens at the point of sale — particularly at unpackaged-food counters where the 14 declarable allergens have to be communicated accurately on request.

Common questions

For packaged-food-only handling, Level 1 Food Hygiene is the appropriate level. If staff move between aisles and an in-store food counter, Level 2 is the safer choice.

Anyone advising customers on allergens at an open-food counter (deli, bakery, butcher, fish, prepared food) should hold Food Allergy Awareness. Allergen information must be provided accurately when asked, and front-line staff are the ones being asked.

Each certificate is issued in an individual learner's name, but you can purchase any number of seats. Contact us at the support email in the footer if you need a consolidated invoice.
