Food Allergen Awareness Course — UK Online, 14 Allergens & Natasha's Law

Food allergens are the single biggest cause of food-business prosecutions in the UK in recent years. The Food Allergy Awareness course is designed to give every food handler — and especially front-of-house staff — the knowledge to handle allergen questions safely and to comply with Natasha's Law on Pre-Packed for Direct Sale (PPDS) labelling.

The course runs through the 14 declarable allergens defined under UK law (cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, peanuts, soybeans, milk, nuts, celery, mustard, sesame, sulphites, lupin, molluscs). It covers how allergens differ from intolerances, how cross-contact happens in kitchens, and how to communicate allergen information to customers — including the legal duty to provide it accurately on request.

Natasha's Law (the Food Information Amendment) came into force in October 2021 and requires food prepacked for direct sale on the same premises (PPDS) to carry a full ingredients list with allergens emphasised. The course covers what counts as PPDS, what the label must show, and how to handle the operational changes.

The course is 5 lessons, a 25-question multiple-choice final test with a 70% pass mark, and unlimited retakes. £16.99, certificate downloadable on completion.

Common questions

Yes. There's a dedicated section on PPDS — what it is, the labelling requirements, and how typical café and takeaway operations need to adapt.

Yes — it's particularly useful for waiting staff and counter staff, who are the people customers ask about allergens.
