Level 1 Food Hygiene Online — UK Certificate for Low-Risk Roles

Level 1 Food Hygiene is the entry-level food safety qualification, designed for staff in low-risk roles — front-of-house servers, waiting staff, packaged-food retail, kitchen porters, and anyone whose contact with open food is limited or supervised. Doing it online lets new hires get certificated on their first shift.

The course is four short lessons covering the basics: what food poisoning is, personal hygiene rules, basic temperature awareness and cleaning principles. The final test is 20 multiple-choice questions with a 70% pass mark, unlimited retakes and no time limit.

Level 1 is the minimum reasonable food hygiene training and is what most front-of-house and packaged-food retail roles require. If a role involves preparing or cooking open food, you should choose Level 2 instead.

The certificate downloads as a PDF on completion and carries the learner's name and the date. It can be verified at our public verification URL using the certificate ID.

For most front-of-house roles with limited handling of open food, yes. If the barista is also preparing food (sandwiches, plated breakfasts), Level 2 is the better choice.

Usually 1–2 hours including the final test.

Yes. Level 1 is not a prerequisite for Level 2 — you can take Level 2 at any time. Many learners take only Level 2 if they're going straight into a kitchen role.
